6 Key Factors to Consider Before Purchasing A Trailer

6 Key Factors to Consider Before Purchasing A Trailer

Professionals in the landscape industry know that when you are in business, time equals money. The only true valuable resource we have in life is time. Every investment should be about spending our time wisely, in every facet of our lives. In our businesses, investing in quality products and equipment not only allows us to spend our time wisely, but creates a healthier work life environment. Purchasing a trailer should not just be looked at as a business investment, but a quality of life investment. With over 50 years experience in this incredible industry, it is our pleasure to team up with the Lawn Care Influencers Summit 2019 and share 6 things to consider and look for before purchasing a trailer. As a trailer manufacturer, in the production of the trailer, it is easy to know where to cut costs to keep the prices low and push more sales. In our experience; however, this does not serve the end user for the long haul. It increases sales for the manufacturer but the end user gets a lower quality trailer that is not built to last. When you’re in the market for a trailer you want to look for a manufacturer that has you in mind. Here are some key factors to consider.
Quality Lighting Systems: There is nothing more frustrating than a trailer with poor wiring that is not assembled properly. Wiring that is dangling and clipped along the frame is easily damaged and once damaged becomes unusable and costly to repair. When looking at lighting make sure that the wire is encased and protected to ensure dependability everytime you hook up.
Heavy Duty/ Replaceable Fenders: Dents happen; it comes with the industry. Fenders welded directly to the trailer are not easily replaceable. They are costly and eat up time in the work day needing repair. Once dented, the overall value of the trailer is also depreciated. Visual appeal is diminished and user value decreased. Look for heavy duty and replaceable fenders that bolt to the trailer. That way, when dents happen, fenders can be easily and quickly replaced.
Quality Attachment Systems: Cheap ball hitches are to keep the cost down, period. They ensure a future purchase of a better quality hitch later on. Professionals know how important a quality adjustable quick hitch system is, so get it from the start. Focus on quality and functionality.
Sturdy Sides, Floor and Tailgates: It is common to see a steel frame with light duty wood or tin side panels. Look for a trailer that is constructed with tubular steel and dimensional sheeting. The trailer will weigh and cost more, but will be stronger, more dependable and last longer.
Secure Tie Down and Safety Gates: Trailers that are constructed with the end user in mind are constructed with functional side rail tie down capacity and secure rear door locking systems to eliminate safety concerns. Spending time trying to secure things is time wasted. Look for trailers with quality side rail tie down capacities and safety gates. Safety mechanisms in place minimize work hours and costly accidents.
Attachments and Storage Locations with Locking Systems: A well organized trailer tells customers they are working with a well organized company, as well as being a great marketing tool while out and about. Time spent looking for unorganized equipment is time that can be used doing the job. Look for a trailer that combines storage for all of your tools, liquids, and safety gear in strategic locations with locking systems to keep your equipment safe and your work day flowing.
At Green Valley, we believe being in the landscaping industry is one of the most noble professions. We strive for efficiency, function, quality, and versatility in our products because we know the value of a trailer that is built for the end user. We hope you’ve found these factors to consider beneficial when you’re in the market for your own trailer. See it as a life and time investment and not only will your business flourish, but your life will prosper as well. As part of the Lawn Care Influencers Summit 2019, we wish you a safe, productive and enjoyable season ahead! #LawnCareInfluencersSummit2019#LawnCareInfluencersSummit2019

Why Get a Lawn Aeration?

A lot of people wonder, why get a lawn aeration? Well a proper lawn aeration is done with a machine called an aerator. Using this aerator a lawn care technician works front to back with the machine to ensure the ground has no less than 2" plug pulled from the lawn. Thes plugs are composed of soil, thatch, and grass roots. The reason that you want this process done to the lawn is that by removing this plug you are helping the lawn in multiple ways. Fist you are loosening the tension within the lawn, thus allowing the soil to breathe. If we are allowing the soil to breathe we are also allowing oxygen to circulate through the soil promoting root growth and faster more efficient photosynthesis as well. This process also opens the soil which allows it to retain water properly, to feed your grass and this helps to promote proper growth.

If you choose to seed along with your lawn aeration you will allowing the seeds a 90% better opportunity to germinate as long as you water along with the seeding. The seeds will have a much better opportunity to germinate if you choose to do both the aeration and seeding in the summer of r fall. You want a time where the temperatures are cooler and the soil is moist from rain or watering. If you are unsure of where to go to get an aeration and or seeding Doctor Green offers these services in Illinois, Indiana, and Texas. When is the best time to aerate your lawn ?

When is the best time to aerate your lawn ?

Is spring the best time to aerate or is fall the best?  We believe the best time to aerate is when you can get the deepest plugs out of the lawn. In the picture below you can see the lawn is just starting to green up from a spring application of fertilizer and the lawn is moist from recent rain. Now that the lawn is actively growing an aeration is a crucial part of the lawns agronomic program the recent moisture softens the soil allowing for a better plug. Aeration will allow air and moisture better penetrate the soil and root system, relieve compaction from wear damage and increase the lawns root system to better take up moisture and nutrients like the fertilizer.

To answer the main question of this blog, it is usually good to aerate in spring or fall because typically the ground is softer and we will get a better plug. However, if we ever get lots of moisture in the summer you could even aerate then. The key is how soft the ground is at a given time. Here in the midwest we have had an abnormally dry spring so far and with some rain in the forecast we can get the deep plugs needed make that aeration most effective.

Lawn Seeding - Tip's and Tricks

So you're trying to seed your lawn? I'm guessing that your currently looking at  bare spots in your yard and you're ready to pull your hair out right? Well, guess what?  Your not the only one! We all have been there, but don’t fret because seeding your lawn is not as hard as you may think. Pay attention to these 5 tips and you should be on your way to filling in those bare spots in no time:

1.) Scope the area you are seeding and select the right seed variety for the job. Are you seeding in a shaded area or is their full sun? If you are seeding in a shaded area like near a tree or by the house you need to make sure you select a seed variety that performs well in shade (St. Augustine, Red Fescue are some examples). If you are dealing with areas of full sun you will have more options but you should also confirm which type of seed to use regardless (Kentucky Blue Grass, Bermuda, Zoysia).

2.) Use a quality brand of grass seed. One of most common problems with bad grass seed is the prevalence of weeds. If the seed has not been properly filtered of weed seeds you can do more harm than good because you may end up with stubborn weeds that never go away after. Consult your local garden center or lawn care company and get the best seed you can, it is worth the investment and will save you money over time.

3.) Be prepared to water every day for a few weeks after seeding. All seeds need water to grow and the first 2 to 3 weeks is the most important time period. Follow a watering schedule recommended for the seed variety you are using.

4. Ensure soil contact is made. Grass seed takes root in soil so make sure that you either spread topsoil before seeding or have a core aeration done to the lawn. Either of these options will allow for the seed to germinate.

5. Make sure it is the correct time of year. If you are using a cool season seed then seed in spring or fall when the conditions are cool, overcast and moist. If you are using a warm season grass then seed when the temperatures start to warm up in late spring or summer.
